My Transformation Journey….Part 2, Adding Exercise

Turns out I was able to walk those 2 laps around the airport during my break. And most days after that whenever I had a break I would walk anywhere from 2-4 laps. Step 2, eat better. I got a book…..wish I still had it so I could see my journey even more but I leant it out and didn’t get it back. “Strong women stay slim” by dr Miriam Nelson. There was a pasta dish with a creamy sauce and veggies…..yum. (Not where I am now but sure was a massive improvement from Mac-n-cheese and hotdogs.). I measured my water glasses and kept a notebook by the sink to check off how many glasses I’d had every day. I began packing my lunch for work, lots of veggies, tacos, soups……so many little containers, some days it was overwhelming. Dr Miriam also said I had to lift weights. Vacation Recap, what worked, what didn’t

Oops! I’ve been back now for 2 weeks and people are asking how my prep all ended up…..so here’s the recap. So here is a blurb from the prep blog: Finally, I visualize and journal my vacation. Yes, for real. I see myself ordering room service coffee, sitting out on the balcony meditating. Then heading to breakfast where I will skip the stale doughnuts and get extra bacon with my eggs. After breakfast the hubby and I will stroll around the poolside track for 1-1 1/2 miles followed by a rousing game of cribbage! As he heads out to the casino, I will go up to the fitness center (this year there is a boxing ring!!) some years I hire a trainer just to see what they have for me and it’s like a challenge for them to try to kill another trainer…..I’m a little more careful about revealing that these last couple of trips😐. My Transformation, part 1, I DECIDE

What has happened to me? I was always the skinny one, the lucky one to be able to eat whatever I wanted. I feel so old. I am huge. I have to go buy bigger jeans. My work uniforms don’t fit; didn’t I just get a bigger size last year? I am sooooooo tired all the time, will I ever feel like I can do something besides work and sleep…..Sleep, sleep, do I really ever sleep? My clothes are so tight, I am so uncomfortable all the time. I can’t move. That was my daily, maybe hourly litany…..I’m so fat. I’m so tired. I’m so old. 18 years ago! Shoot, I don’t even think I’m that old now……what was going on with me!? I was 200 pounds. I had twin toddlers at home. I was working second shift outside at the airport. I cleaned my kids plates for them, ate what they ate….hot dogs and Mac-n-cheese, crackers and frosting, juice...

Planning your vacation!

I am soooooooooo excited! We are heading out for our annual two week vacation to the Caribbean! While my bags aren’t packed (yet) I have an extensive list of what to bring (multiple swimsuits, throw away books, sunscreen….), what not to bring (strappy shoes, long pants….) and what needs to get accomplished before we go (you know, tell the bank you are going international so they don’t shut your credit card off mid vacation, stop the mail….) there is still a very important part to vacation prep work….. scouting the hotel fitness center and visualization of your healthy habits while on vacation. So first of all, we book out hotel (or ship when cruising) based on the fitness center. Is there one!? What is in it? Never rely on the pictures! I can’t tell you how often it looks like there is a full gym only to find a stationary bike from 1980 and a broken elliptical beside a “rack”...

But it’s the holidays……

Get dressed, show up and “woman up” So you’re busy. It’s “the holidays.” You’ve got a lot on your plate; work deadlines, cookies to make, gifts to buy aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand You have to exercise and plan your meals! Seriously I hate this line. It is an excuse. The holidays consist of a day or two….I’ll even give you 4; thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Years Day. Is it a busy time of year, sure, and so is the week of July 4th, Memorial Day week, Labor Day week, fishing opener, deer hunting and my birthday. Need more, lets consult the local bank schedule….Columbus Day, Presidents’ Day, your anniversary and birthday. Give it a rest! Busy is what you make it. Priorities happen. If your health is a priority then that is what will get taken care of first…..first your meals are prepped and your exercise is planned, scheduled and done…THEN make cookies, shop for gifts….heck you probably got an inspired...

Stuck in a rut? Tired of the same old same old for supper every week? Shampoo just not doing it for your hair anymore? Clothes just not looking right? Ready for a change but everywhere you go you see the same stuff that got you stuck? Shop somewhere else. That’s right, go to a store you’ve always wanted to try. You will see all kinds of new things. Remember when your favorite grocery store shifted everything around for no apparent reason, and all the sudden you had to slow down and really look up do down every aisle? Bet you bought more those first few trips. And saw products you didn’t even know existed. Why, because you were so programmed to go into the store, take a right and in aisle 3, one third of the way down the aisle on the middle shelf was the product you came in for….you didn’t even see the new section of coconut oils....

So….we are talking about the invisibility factor of turning 53 in the American Female. Anything from not being consulted on a project to not being flirted with at the coffeeshop. We’ve been examining how this happens, how we as females contribute to the phenomenon and how we can take back our radiance. Think back to getting ready for your first job, whether that was in high school or after your kids went to school. What was involved? A full face of makeup? A hairdryer and curling appliances? 14 outfit changes? Nails done? Shoes just right, not too high, not too flat and comfort be damned? Ok. Now what happens when you head out to work? MAYBE a swipe of mascara and a dash of lipstick. Hair in a ponytail. Whatever clothes were clean. Nails that haven’t seen polish since prom. Shoes, only the most comfy. Who do you know? Part 3 Reclaiming Radiance

Ok, up front and in full disclosure….I am in sales….so I regularly ask, “who do you know?” Referrals are the way of business. So I am chatting about how I am growing my business and ask this wonderful woman who she knows. I get a blank stare. I continue that I am really wanting to expand my class sizes and maybe she knows someone who has talked about getting fit…..from church? Work? Book club? Neighbor? She finally says that our class group at the gym is her group. I want to cry….first for happiness, this is what I have worked for, building a strong community at the gym that even if I am not a strong enough pull in the Minnesota January you will still come because your friends are there! Yeah! But then I want to cry for sadness because we are the only group in her world? And this brings me back to the invisible woman. The one...

“What!? I’m a grown adult, I don’t need your permission.” Well guess what, maybe you do. Have you ever changed something that you have been doing so long that no one around you takes you seriously? Or you are met with a ton of resistance so you go back to whatever you were doing before? An example or two….. I was maybe 8 when my mom decided we would switch from 2% milk to skim. Wow. I remember massive upset in the house. Or when we switched from white bread to wheat! I’m surprised we really did that now……my mom listened to a lot of complaining from me, my sister and dad. Fast forward a “few” years when I started taking walks at break time instead of sitting down with everyone to a soda and candy bar.
